James S. Lane's Studio

|
My desk looking toward the end of the room where the storage closet is
located, also the entrace to the dark room. The door to the darkroom is actually in
the back of the closet allowing for a light trap so that I can enter and leave the
darkroom without letting any of the "dark" out. The chair with my name on
it is for art shows and customers. On the wall is a 1981 painting of our house in
the winter. The Arty-fact computer and my
ever-present glass of carbonated water can also be seen.

This is from the other side of the desk, looking at the main studio
painting area. The seldom-used TV and VCR's (Beta and VHS) are over the printer and
computer. My files are just beyond that and then my small drawing table, right now
being used to support the weight of 166 blocks in the second block painting, this one of
my son, aging him from10 to 60 years.
The stool comes in handy to hold my palette when I'm painting on the drawing
table but when I work with the easel, the palette goes on the drawing table which is
tilted to a flatter position. Behind the curtains is a sliding glass door leading to
the back patio overlooking the woods and the pool.

Swinging on around to the right is my cutting table, book shelves, under
counter flourescent lighting, the mat-cutting counter, storage drawers for
matboard, and my mascot, Meryl the squirrel. I've used him as a model for my
students at school to draw. I never have drawn or painted him myself. The
carpet on the wall behind the counter matches that on the floor, and also in the decorator
panels of my cabinet doors.

And just to the right of the previous photo is my portrait drawing area
with my larger drawing table. The shelf contains about 17 years of videotape
plus a small part of my extensive movie collection. The two drawers contain
drawing and mat-cutting supplies. The dark area to the right of the drawing
table is the entrance to the studio from the family room. These pictures appear
pretty dark because they were taken at night but the six-foot patio sliders allow a great
deal of light into the studio, often more than I like which explains the heavy brown
drapes which I keep closed much of the time.
I find the type of work I do, I don't rely heavily on any particular type of light.
I'm not a big stickler for such things though I do have both incandescent and
flourescent lighting so I can mix and match or compare the work under different lights.
Thank you for visiting my Paintin' Place. The wet bar is just outside in the
family room and the bathroom is to the right.
Help yourself to either one.
