New direction

OMG……….. just looked and didn’t realize how long it had been since I posted the beginnings of my latest encaustic work. I started these with the sheet music scores…….. then when I  got home from Santa Fe, they were complete strangers to me. That kind of thing happens if it is too long between studio visits.

I loved that sheet music, too……… Oh well……….if the path turns, it turns. You should not look back as it is all for the best usually. I won’t discuss the times is not.

I looked at those beginnings and kept avoiding them by working on other paintings. Finally, the time came to just “DO IT”… add the encaustic paint and get going. After all….it is just paint and panels.

I added and added…scraped and scraped. Fell in love with the oil painting sticks I had from the encaustic conference and R & F paints. OMG, they are so creamy and they manipulate so wonderfully………then add some encaustic medium and fuse. Oh my.

Layer after layer…some with more, some with less………….until I think they are done. I hope so as I have a new canvas already on the painting wall waiting and calling to me.

The series of 5 is called………… “Johnson Creek, Summer’…. surprise, surprise!

Work for beeline show

Two down, one to go, if I can get another encaustic painting done to enter for the Beeline show in Provincetown, MA. I always hate to send in an entry to a show without sending as many pieces as they allow.

Hum….now what can I do now to come up with another one to generally fit the theme of BEELINE??? Do you remember how I keep mentioning I hate themes… why do they come around so often!

Today on FB there was a small discussion about entering shows… facing rejection and all that stuff we artists contend with every day, year after year. Joanne Mattera, the founder of THE Encaustic Conference reminded us of a great blog post she had up some time back on rejection.  Great article all artists should read now and then.

I can hope I won’t be going to read it again for awhile.  Pictures after the jury comes in.

Interesting week

It’s been a busy, productive week for me in the studio. I agreed to teach a one on one class with another artist. SO, Monday we met at my studio and got into talking, painting and discussing what it is she wanted to learn more about. It was a lot of fun in many respects for me. I’m not trained as a teacher, so I hope I heard what she was wanting to learn more about and I hope that I helped her with it. I know that I learned just from the experience of thinking about and trying to articulate what I do in my own process.

In my trying to show her how I work…….and emphasizing that this is only one of a myriad of ways to work as an abstract artist, I got a good painting going for myself. Today I went back to work on it some more but I’ve decided it needs more time for me to think about it.

With that decided, I decided it was time to heat up the wax again and get to work on some more encaustic paintings. I started gathering up materials to think of using. It came to me to use some of my experiments with the hot box………..OR maybe just use paper incorporated into the work. Something slightly comical came to me to try so I’m going for it. If it turns out I’ll clue y’all in on it later. For now…only hints!
